Read the Arizona Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling

§ 13-3604, which had provided that a woman who has an abortion that is not necessary to save her life shall be imprisoned from one to five years. By affirmatively declining to hold women criminally responsible for seeking or obtaining an abortion, the legislature did not grant women a right to seek an abortion; it simply decided the state would not prosecute women for doing so. The majority misses the mark by asking and then answering whether § 36-2322(B) grants a limited right to abortion. ¶79 Fifth, the majority incorrectly elevates the construction note in § 36-2322(B)'s session law to equal its text. Storms have walloped the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Plains, South and Northeast with low temperatures, heavy snow, ice storms, freezing rain and high winds for the past two weeks. Tina Kotek on Thursday declared a statewide emergency following deadly ice storms. Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned. “Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,” the weather service said. The National Weather Service said there could be a thaw next week, when the forecast calls for above-average temperatures across almost the whole country.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles motorists should expect traffic snarls indefinitely as crews assess how much damage was caused by a raging fire that closed a major elevated interstate near downtown, officials said Sunday. Commuters were urged to work from home or take public transportation into downtown Los Angeles. Newsom declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon and directed the state Department of Transportation to request assistance from the federal government. California Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin said storage yards under highways are common statewide and across the country. At least 16 homeless people living underneath the highway were evacuated and brought to shelters, Mayor Karen Bass said.

America’s largest renewable power company is among several U.S. energy and utility companies, including Exxon and Southern Company, that continue to promote big, concentrated bets on company stock in worker retirement plans. Nearly 50% of the investments in NextEra’s employee-funded 401(k) retirement plan are in company stock, the highest among all 30 companies in the S&P 500 Utilities Sector (.SPLRCU). NextEra declined to comment on its use of company stock in employee 401(k) plans. Opinion | When Being Good Is Just a Matter of Being Lucky
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Indeed, one resolution of the “moral luck” paradox is that free will does not truly exist, Kristin Mickelson, a philosophy lecturer at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has written. The first drives drunk and kills a person. The second drives drunk and loses control of her car, but by luck doesn’t kill anyone. “Being blameworthy for an event is about being accountable for what you have done in the world,” Hartman wrote. There’s no excluding luck from our calculations, because luck “saturates” who we are, what we do and the consequences of what we do, Hartman wrote.

The environmental impact of IT has been largely overlooked, said Matt Warburton, principal consultant and sustainability lead at IT advisory firm ISG. "IT's environmental impact, as a proportion of the overall business impact, is increasing," Warburton said. "More than half of executives use spreadsheets for some ESG data," Moyer said. "They are generally among the most 'sustainably-savvy' organizations, with ambitious commitments for their own operations and deep expertise in minimizing IT's environmental impact," Warburton said. "If an enterprise has a net zero goal, IT should also have its own net zero goal.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Howard Holland, the acting warden of the prison, described for the first time how Mr. Cavalcante escaped. The earlier escape was thwarted within minutes when a corrections officer in a watchtower saw the person fleeing and sounded the alarm. But this time, the officer in the tower, for some reason, did not see Mr. Cavalcante, whose absence was discovered by officers in his cell block nearly an hour later. Mr. Holland said the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office was investigating the escape. For many residents, Mr. Cavalcante has been an unseen presence dominating their daily lives, creating as much of an inconvenience as any sense of panic.

To find out how to make the most of downtime during work travel, Insider spoke to four experts about how they maximize their commutes. Voiceover artist Vanessa James said, "I use lounge access as a strategic part of my travels. If you don't have airport lounge access, buying a day pass is a good option if your wait time is going to be long. Business law professor Robert Bird says he doesn't opt for lounge access when he travels, and he only needs a quiet corner to be productive. Long car rides with colleagues to a work event or conference can also be a good time to brainstorm or collaborate.

Furby, the ’90s toy phenomenon that divided kids and parents into opposing camps when it first hit stores and quickly became a craze, is making yet another comeback. The latest iteration of the animatronic toy launched on Amazon Thursday and rolls into stores nationwide on July 15 after a nearly 10-year gap. Still, Hasbro said it sold more than 40 million Furby toys globally in the first three years after they launched. In 2016, Hasbro launched Furby Connect, a version of the toy that incorporated Bluetooth for content upgrades via an app and an off button. “There’s a saying in the toy industry that what’s old is new again,” he said.

The experts were worried about a so-called wage-price spiral. Businesses' revenues "have risen faster than costs, and so margins have room to absorb rising labor costs." "It's not that a wage-price spiral couldn't happen, but it's low on the list of concerns versus the factors we know are problematic," she said. A key mechanism that would fuel a wage-price spiral, workers' bargaining power, has been weakened because unions have less power than in the 1970s, Makszin added. "But if you let interest rates go down against inflation and in effect weaken, you have an inflation spiral.
April 19 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden had the power to require employees of federal contractors to receive COVID-19 vaccinations, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday, throwing out a judge's ruling that had blocked the mandate in Arizona. The court reversed a federal judge in Phoenix who blocked the mandate in Arizona last year. The office of Arizona Attorney General Kristin Mayes, a Democrat who took office in January, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Supreme Court last year blocked Biden's separate mandate that businesses with 100 or more employees require workers to receive COVID-19 vaccines or undergo regular testing. Last month, a New Orleans-based federal appeals court ruled that federal agencies could not enforce a requirement that government employees receive vaccines.
[1/2] Mykul Coscia, who performs drag as Eazy Love at Play, a night club, poses for a portrait after a deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. March 29, 2023. Even before the shooting, many transgender Tennesseans felt villainized by their state's efforts to regulate the lives of gay and trans people, and were increasingly fearful for their safety. Police identified the Nashville shooter as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, and initially referred to Hale as female. Every time there is a school shooting, Story VanNess said she has sleepless nights: she was a special education teacher in a Knoxville school for several years before becoming the director of trans and non-binary programs at Knox Pride. "We've had another school shooting but, because this shooter was trans, that's taken a back seat so politicians can demonize trans people.
"If we talk about the war through the means of art, this wound will be able to heal much faster. Theatre allowed people to experience trauma in "a non-traumatic way," added Borovenskiy, whose troupe performs in English. A bomb shelter in World War Two, it is now an "art shelter," Borovenskiy says. In the early days of the Ukraine war, 40 people and seven cats lived there to stay safe, and actors rehearsed among them for "The Book of Sirens". Borovenskiy said Milward's visit was "an example of international theatre support and solidarity" that he hopes will be cemented by Ukraine's first fringe theatre festival.

Google's head of mental health and wellbeing was laid off after 15 years working for the company. Current and former Google staff say they can't find the rationale behind the layoffs. Since July 2021 she had served as director of Google's mental health and wellbeing, which she described as her "dream role." Maczko added that "many people" in Google's mental health and wellbeing team had been laid off, though she did not specify how many. Filings Google made in California show that the company laid off dozens of directors across various divisions in the state.
